The History Of CenterPoint Church
CenterPoint Church started as a satellite church of Glasgow Church, a church in Bear, DE. Its earliest services were in 2004 and with no pastor on staff, the church would gather to worship watching a live video feed. It met at several locations in Dover, including the Duncan Center, for a stretch of 12 years. Damon Cinaglia was the main staff person from Glasgow who would come down to set up the live video feed and lead worship, and eventually he became the campus pastor. The church was “particularized” (recognized as an official church, no longer considered a mission church) as Damon finished seminary and was ordained on October 9, 2016. The church also ordained John Pennington, Jr. and Lee Geissler as its first official elders, and John Pennington, Sr. as its first official deacon.
Earlier, in March 2016, the church had moved 20 minutes north of Dover to Smyrna, a town where the Presbytery had always wanted to plant a church. They rented space at the First State Military Academy for a couple years while they looked around for a building to purchase and renovate. In 2018, the church bought the Citizens Bank building in the middle of downtown and began renovating it to use for worship. The first worship service at the newly renovated space was on October 6, 2019, and the church celebrated with great joy in their new home. Several weeks later, Rev. Dave Dorst and his family came to candidate for the pastor position, and in mid-December the church voted to hire Dave. His first week at CenterPoint was the second week of March 2020, which promptly ended with church getting cancelled because of the COVID virus. After three months of online only services, CenterPoint began meeting in person again in early June
The last few years have been an exciting time of staying faithful to God’s call to be His people in the middle of this town and community. Three new Ruling Elders were ordained and installed in May 2022, and the Building Dedication Ceremony was in January 2023. The church is excited for what the Lord has in store in the future!
